A Retrospective Look at Viagra

Often scientists have created medicines that have turned out not to treat the conditions that they were created to treat, but do treat other conditions or diseases. Viagra is probably the best known example of this since it was originally created to help treat angina. During clinical trials it was shown that Viagra did not produce the beneficial results hoped for when used to treat subjects suffering from angina. It was however noted that the medicine helped to treat erectile dysfunction in the subjects. Since the medication was unsuitable for use in its original capacity, Pfizer decided to release it as an erectile dysfunction treatment.

A large amount of publicity was generated since this was the very first anti-impotence drug that had been released on to the North American market. The reaction to the advent of Viagra created publicity for the product which was far beyond what Pfizer could have or possibly would have expended. This reaction is still present over a decade after the medication was initially released. The use of Viagra has changed significantly over the years as it has become more and more accepted in mainstream society, by people of all ages.

At first the “little blue pill” was seen as something that no man under the age of seventy should use, but that perception has gradually changed. Now Viagra is not viewed as something that people have to be ashamed of buying. This is largely due to its use for purposes other than that for which it was originally intended. Viagra’s popularity as a sexual stimulant has increased over time and it’s not abnormal for both partners, regardless of their sex, to take one in order to heighten their sexual experience.

A lot of the publicity is generated by adverse reactions that people can have to using Viagra, but what is often discounted is the total number of people who take it. This shows that the adverse effects are by far the exception rather than the rule for people making use of Viagra. There are a lot of ways that people Viagra that are not recommended and in fact there are some that are absolutely prohibited. Misuse of the drug is the cause of the great majority of all adverse reactions that occur. This misuse may be unintentional, but the effects can still be just as devastating and tend to provoke just as much publicity and the cases where the misuse has been intentional.
